Leila and I spent the summer of 1960 in Europe. We went over with Bill Condon and traveled with him the first half of the summer then settled down in Florence for the second half. Before we left Houston, I knew I wanted to paint what I would call "field patterns". I would make sketches from the train window as we were traveling. Our room at the Pensione Adria was large enough for me to set up a painting area by one of the big windows. There was a marvelous view of the Duomo and the Ponte Santa Trinita. I completed 30 paintings during the six weeks we were there.
